The Church would have been better off without the Reformation. Agree? Disagree?

Here is the video of the recent debate between Dr. James White and Rev. Dr. Thomas Norris (Priest of the Diocese of Ossory) on the Reformation.

Part one can be found here.

Part two can be found here.

I have not listened to this debate yet (it's been one of those weeks). I'm somewhat familiar with Dr. James White, so I'm sure he did an outstanding job.

Debate: Are Roman Catholics Our Brothers and Sisters in Christ? (White vs Wilson)

Does Trinitarian baptism join you to the New Covenant? Does it join you to Christ? Does it make you a brother or sister in Christ with everyone else who has likewise been baptized, even if you hold to a false gospel? Are Roman Catholics our brothers and sisters in Christ by baptism, but not by confession of faith? These are the issues debated by Douglas Wilson of Christ Church, Moscow, Idaho and James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries. (2 Hours 48 Minutes)

Before "Christianity in Crisis" and "Strange Fire" There was "Marjoe"

Back in the 1990's there appeared two much-needed books documenting and exposing the heretical doctrines and deviant practices that had found a home in Pentecostalism: Christianity in Crisis and Counterfeit Revival  by Hank Hanegraaff. Both of these books were valuable contributions by a Christian writer dedicated to the health and sanctification of the church. Recently the church has also benefited from the Strange Fire conference and book. There have also been contributions by non-Christians that have some value, for instance James Randi's The Faith Healers. While Randi appears to be bent on destroying the Church, one should not deny the value of his work exposing the deceit and trickery of some of the faith healers.

Recently I came across a documentary from the early 1970's infiltrating and exposing some of the deviant practices of American Pentecostalism: Marjoe. Marjoe Gortner had been raised in Pentecostalism, and was himself a novelty within the movement being ordained as a preacher at four years old. As an adult in the early 1970's, Marjoe traveled the Pentecostal circuit with a film crew bent on exposing the movement. In the film, Gortner is accepted by a number of churches as a gifted preacher, none of which realized that he didn't believe a word of what he was preaching, nor did they realize the film crew was making a documentary to attack Pentecostalism. The documentary eventually won the 1972 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

I found the film quite disturbing and even at times blasphemous. On the other hand,  the film does capture some of the fraudulent practices of Pentecostalism. In understanding those people seeking to be caught up in a frenzied / emotional worship service, this movie is a valuable contribution.

I found the video below on the Internet Archive.

Rome says: Pay Me Now, Pay Me Later

Here's one of the most interesting debate moments between Dr. James White and Father Peter Stravinskas on the topic of purgatory. The entire debate can be found here.

What Does George Fox Say? Fun With Quaker Theology

For those of you who have been infected by one of the most insidious pop songs in decades, here's a spoof of the song based on Quaker theology:

Catholic Borg Explains Theological Flaws to a Protestant Star Fleet Officer

I found this one on the Roman Catholic CARM board:

The posted link to this video was to a site called Angelqueen.org, but it appears that  the video was taken down. I thought the clip was humorous, but also very telling as to how some Roman Catholics think of themselves. As I've come to understand Rome's zealous followers, they think they are united like like the Borg, but actually are far from it.

I've maintained a series of posts on this blog called Blueprint For Anarchy. These hundred + posts demonstrate the lack of unity within Romanism. To date, I have 105 entries, and I'm not actively looking for content. I simply post stuff I come across. Had I been actively looking for material, I could have a new post every day for this series.

My favorite to date is when a staff apologist from Catholic Answers stated 70% of Roman Catholics do not understand the Eucharist. The irony is that Pope Benedict said, "The Eucharist is like the beating heart that gives life to the whole mystical body of the Church: a social organism entirely founded on the spiritual but concrete link with Christ."

Frank the Hippie Pope

This is making its way across the Internet... It's probably a tad disrespectful, but it does reflect in essence what many of us on the other side of the Tiber think of some of the statements from the new pope.

How to Write a Worship Song (In 5 Minutes or Less)

Clever. We don't have this problem at my church. In fact, I've never seen a guitar in my church.

R.C. Sproul’s Luther and the Reformation, Free Downloads

I missed a lot this past week due to Hurricane Sandy. Nathan Bingham has posted free downloads to audio and video of R.C. Sproul's Luther and the Reformation. Thanks Nathan! I've probably mentioned this before, but I was more or less introduced to the importance of the Reformation through Dr. Sproul's materials many years ago now. I would assume such is the case for many folks that came out of broad Arminian evangelicalism into a confessional church.

Dr. Sproul is Reformed, but this doesn't mean my Lutheran and Roman Catholic friends wouldn't benefit from these free lectures. Even if you don't agree with Dr. Sproul on everything, learn how to sift. That is, interact with the materials by sifting the stuff out you think is helpful as opposed to the stuff you disagree with.  I do this all the time with Reformation materials.
