Luther's correspondence and other contemporary letters Vol 2 By Martin Luther, Preserved Smith, Charles Michael Jacobs Published by Lutheran Publication Society, 1918 Item notes: v. 2

"Smith included with Luther’s correspondence, such as letters of Humanists, of members of the Roman hierarchy, and of politically important figures, as well as contemporary reports on events with which Luther’s name was connected. On the other hand, and this is one of the shortcomings of the Smith edition, Luther’s letters seem to be lost among these additional documents, which frequently take more space than Luther’s own writings. In addition many of the documents are not translated but only very freely summarized, so that the reader is hardly able to recognize the underlying original" (LW 48:xiv).

The Letters of Martin Luther (Margaret Currie, editor), 1908.  alternate web page link. ("M. A. Currie, The Letters of Martin Luther (London, 1908); this is a selection of five hundred very freely and often inaccurately rendered letters; since the text offers almost no commentary, this edition is of little value to the study of Luther" Luther, M. (1999). Luther’s works, vol. 48: Letters I (J. J. Pelikan, H. C. Oswald, & H. T. Lehmann, Eds.). Fortress Press).
