the question I have is this:  Are American patriotic / political Christians making the same mistake in a different area that the early church did by the over-exalting of Mary, neglect of the doctrine of justification by faith alone in the NT; and the additions of other man-made traditions?

It seems to me the same root of idolatry and leaving our first love.  Revelation 2:4-5

Again, I wish I had time to write up an article on this; but I don't.  I hope to find time in the future to study the issues more and write more on it.

The Dividing Line earlier today

Dr. James R. White discusses 4 different issues:
1. the Popes and the change of Roman Catholic Theology since Vatican 2; (Francis is different than Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) But why didn't Benedict XVI (Ratzinger) say any of this while he was Pope? 

2. Rachel Held Evans and her liberalism and support for Trans-genderism;

3. a troubling article at Desiring God (by Nick Roen) about homosexuality and same sex desires (I also had trouble with this article when I read it; Dr. White nails the problems); (parts of the article by Roen are right; and it is no way like the Rachel Held Evans article; but it is troubling nonetheless. It needs to be re-written and clarified.)

4. the issue of "Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God" with Joseph Cumming and Nabeel Qureshi on Unbelievable Radio Program. 

Addendum:
From the article about Pope Benedict XVI, that Dr. White referenced:

Pope Benedict reminds us of the formerly indispensable Catholic conviction of the importance of the salvation of souls:“The missionaries of the 16th century were convinced that the unbaptized person is lost forever. After the [Second Vatican] Council, this conviction was definitely abandoned. The result was a two-sided, deep crisis. Without this attentiveness to the salvation, the faith loses its foundation.”He also speaks of a “profound evolution of dogma” with respect to the dogma that there is no salvation outside the Church. This purported change has led, in the Pope’s eyes, to a loss of the missionary zeal in the Church — “any motivation for a future missionary commitment was removed.”Pope Benedict asks this piercing question: “Why you should try to convince the people to accept the Christian faith when they can be saved even without it?” As to the other consequences of this new attitude in the Church, the Catholics themselves, in Benedict’s eyes, have become less attached to their faith: If there are those who can save their souls with other means, “why should the Christian be bound to the necessity of the Christian faith and its morality?” asks the Pope Emeritus. Two respectful discussions about the Qur'an and the Bible - Dr. James White and Imam Muhammad Musri

The world at this time needs this kind of discussion and debate.  We can disagree without resorting to sinful anger, ad hominem arguments, insults or violence.

Dr. White did an excellent job; and the Imam was very respectful and showed better knowledge of the issues than most Muslims.  He had to be corrected on the common mistake that Muslims repeat that "The Council of Nicea and Constantine decided which books belong in the canon".

Canon Issues have to be constantly talked about, because:
1.  Liberal scholarship constantly attacks the dates of the NT books and distorts the canon process.
2.  The claims of the Roman Catholic Church put the Church over the canon, and that needs to be challenged also.

Papal Infallibility: White vs. Staples

How do we understand Jesus' words and the balance of the Father pouring out His justice and wrath on Jesus as the sin-bearer, and that the Trinity was not ontologically split or separated?

Dr. White has often made the point that Jesus is quoting the first verse of Psalm 22, and expects the Jewish audience to know the rest of the Psalm, like when someone starts the first verse of "Amazing Grace" and many will naturally join in singing it, because they are familiar with it and have memorized it.

Jesus quoting Psalm 22:1 seems to invite the person to read the rest of the Psalm and notice especially these verses below that are also teaching about the suffering servant, the Messiah, who would be crucified and be the ransom for sin:

"But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people.7  All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying,8   “Commit yourself to the Lord; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.” Psalm 22:6-8
. . . 
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws;  And You lay me in the dust of death.16   For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet.17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me;18  They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots."  Psalm 22:15-18

. . . All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, And all the families of the nations will worship before You.28   For the kingdom is the Lord’s And He rules over the nations."  Psalm 22:27-28

"The words are an Aramaic-tinged quotation from Psalm 22, and although Matthew and Mark both offer a translation for the benefit of Gentile readers, they clearly want us to hear the exact words that Jesus spoke. At his lowest ebb, his mind instinctively breathes the Psalter, and from it he borrows the words that express the anguish, not now of his body, but of his soul.

He bore in his soul, wrote Calvin, “the terrible torments of a condemned and lost man” (Institutes, II:XVI, 10). But dare we, on such hallowed ground, seek more clarity?

Against All Hope

There are certainly some very clear negatives. The forsakenness cannot mean, for example, that the eternal communion between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit was broken. God could not cease to be triune.

Neither could it mean that the Father ceased to love the Son: especially not here, and not now, when the Son was offering the greatest tribute of filial piety that the Father had ever received.

Nor again could it mean that the Holy Spirit had ceased to minister to the Son. He had come down upon him at his baptism not merely for one fleeting moment, but to remain on him (John 1:32), and he would be there to the last as the eternal Spirit through whom the Son offered himself to God (Hebrews 9:14).

And finally, the words are not a cry of despair. Despair would have been sin. Even in the darkness God was, “My God,” and though there was no sign of him, and though the pain obscured the promises, somewhere in the depths of his soul there remained the assurance that God was holding him. What was true of Abraham was truer still of Jesus: against all hope, he in hope believed (Romans 4:18).

Truly Forsaken

Yet, with all these qualifiers, this was a real forsaking. Jesus did not merely feel forsaken. He was forsaken; and not only by his disciples, but by God himself. It was the Father who had delivered him up to Judas, to the Jews, to Pilate, and finally to the cross itself.
And now, when he had cried, God had closed his ears. The crowd had not stopped jeering, the demons had not stopped taunting, the pain had not abated. Instead, every circumstance bespoke the anger of God; and there was no countering voice. This time, no word came from heaven to remind him that he was God’s Son, and greatly loved. No dove came down to assure him of the Spirit’s presence and ministry. No angel came to strengthen him. No redeemed sinner bowed to thank him."

At the same time, Jesus, the eternal Son, who voluntarily became flesh for us; also voluntarily went to the cross to pay for our sins.

"No one takes My life from Me, I lay it down on My own initiative, and I take it up again . . . "  John 10:18  (one of the most important verses to know in dealing with Muslims, who think that Christianity teaches that God forced Jesus to pay for our sins in an unjust way.)

The Protestant Reformation brought forth the cry "Sola Scriptura" - that Christianity should be based on the words of scripture alone, not on Roman Catholic church tradition.

Peter D Williams of Catholic Voices argues that the reformers were wrong and that the ultimate authority for Christians rests in the three strands of sacred scripture, sacred teaching and sacred tradition. James White of Alpha and Omega ministries argues that the Catholic church has fallen into error, and that Christians should look to scripture alone for their doctrine.

I noticed that Dr. White's cross examination of Shadid Lewis is not yet up.  I wonder if they had technical problems with that part of the debate.

In part 2, around the 11:30 ff mark, Shadid Lewis says that God is able to sin - to lie, to become a dog, and to fornicate!  You can hear the audience shock at that admission.

Many times over the past 31 years, I have heard Muslims say the same thing; that God is able to lie and sin; but He just chooses not to sin.  I wonder if that is an official doctrine or not; but it is very common in Muslim thought.

Here is one of the great differences between Islam and Christianity.

In Christianity, God is not able to sin or lie or do anything like fornicate.  (Titus 1:2 - "God, who cannot lie"; 1 John 1:5)

The true God cannot do anything that is against His nature.  It is so wonderful that we have a perfect God in the Holy Trinity.

But the god of Islam can sin if He wants to and chooses to, as Shadid admits.

Sola Scriptura, the Canon, and Roman Catholicism

A Brilliant and Clarifying closing argument

I have always apprecited this closing argument by Dr. White in his 1999 debate vs. Mitchell Pacwa on Sola Scritpura.  (also glad to see the full debate is up now at aomin.org.) [Thanks to Rich Pierce for all his hard work!]

It was very effective of Dr. White to bring all those other books up front and stack them up like that; those works that Roman Catholics are going to need to study in order to figure out if they can understand the gospel and the truth of God's Word.  Or they just take the easy way out and say, "I just believe what the Pope and my priest says without worrying about studying it for myself."  The Romanist claim is that they make things clearer and easier by having an infallible interpreter who can tell them the right interpretation of a Bible passage.  When one starts reading all the official documents of Rome and the massive complicated books to try and understand, comparing that with the simple Scripture of Romans 5:1; or Galatians 2:16 or Galatians 3:1-8; or Romans 3:28 or Romans 4:1-8 or Ephesians 2:8-9 or John 5:24; 3:16; 20:30-31; or Acts 13:38-39; or Acts 16:31, or Philippians 3:9; or Mark 1:15; it is very clear on which method is clearer for the aveage person to do to understand the gospel.

Maybe that is why another Roman Catholic [Nancy Pelosi, California congress-woman, then speaker of the house of representatives], in a modern political context,, ie, the ObamaCare take over of the insurance industry, said something like, "hurry up and pass the bill, so we can then read the [massive 2,000+ page] bill and see what is in it."  Maybe she learned that dogmatic authoritarian method from her church and it filtered down into her politics, . . . ya think?   Sounds like Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) -founder of the Jesuits, who said "Whatever we [the hierarchical Roman Church] say is black, even though to your eyes it appears to be white, you must believe that it is black."

Addendum:  The more exact rendering of Ignatius of Loyola's statement:
The 13th Rule for thinking along with the Church Militant, in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola: page 75 on the Pdf below. It is quoted differently than is sometimes translated.

Discussion of Dr. White's book and the Qur'an

Mark Lamprecht of "Here I blog"  (for the gospel of Jesus Christ)

  asked me to write a blog post on James White's book; , What Every Christian Needs to Know about the Qur'an.

My post is specifically on the second half of chapter 1.

 Mark has divided chapter 1 into 2 parts.

 I sincerely hope this will generate good and respectful discussion.  Dividing it up into smaller chunks over many weeks is helpful, in my opinion, because of time; and I want to work through it slowly.  I have pretty much read the whole thing, but because commenting on it, and typing out quotes takes so much time, I like Mark's plan.

 First Discussion on the Introduction to Dr. White's book.

My first comment on the Introduction, with a few changes.  

Excellent beginning and also appreciate Dr. White's goals and desires to witness to the truth of the gospel (Injeel = انجیل )  of Jesus Al Masih  عیسی المسیح  and what is really great about Dr. White is that he uses orthodox believing Muslim sources (endnote # 1, the quote from Imam Malik ( the earliest extant compiler of Hadith and Islamic Jurisprudence = "Malik's Muwatta", from Yasir Qadhi's book.  Yasir Qadhi is a believing orthodox Sunni.  If only Muslims would show that same consistency in dealing with Christianity, and stop using liberal scholars for the basis of their attacks!   Most Muslims rely on liberal scholarship to try and say the gospels were written in 70 AD or afterward (Shabir Ally, Paul Bilal Williams, and most others that I have seen follow this line.  They are forced to this because they have to believe the true gospel message was corrupted between 30 - 45 AD, before any of the NT books were written.  Dr. White's endnote # 3 - he lists the Muslims he has debated with and they are orthodox Muslim believers (not liberal Muslims), whereas Muslims usually quote from liberal higher critical scholars in order to attack the Bible.  Also, Dr. White shows respect by using a Qur'an that was translated by Muslims - see endnote # 5.  

              (I mention some typos; not repeated here)

Using that quote of Imam Malik's about the "kalaam" (کلام  or   کلم word, speech) of Allah - 

            "The Qur'an is the kalaam [کلام ] of Allah, not created, and whoever states that it is created is a disbeliever.  Imam Malik was asked concerning one who says the Qur'an is created, what should be done to him?  He replied, "He should be forced to repent, and if he refuses, then his head should be cut off!"  (quoted on page 9 of James White's book, referencing Yasir Qadhi's book and Imam Malik.) 

This shows a high respect that Muslims have for the Qur'an and the belief that the Word of God and God are both eternal.  (except for the group deemed heretical called the "Mu'atazilites"; and apparently Shi'ites are not supposed to believe that either.  Most Iranian Shiites I have dealt with are not scholars and not even very committed Muslims.  Many Iranian Shiites are disillusioned with Islam today.  Personally, I have found many Iranians from Shiite background who seem to agree with this idea; that God's word is eternal with Him; and many Iranians are open to the gospel and the Deity of Christ, because of this background that they have.)  So, John 1:1 is a key verse to show and emphasize and focus on with Muslims.  As others have said, the closest parallel of the incarnation in Islam is the Qur'an - instead of "The Word became Flesh"(John 1:14), in Islam, it is, "The Word became a book".  (see Norman Geisler and Abdul Saleeb, Answering Islam, Baker, 1993 edition, p. 179.  This book has been updated, so the page number may be different in the new addition.) 

One of the most powerful witnesses that Christians can make is that Arabic word kalaam کلام  (word, speech) or kalameh کلمه (word, singular for "word" - the word used for Jesus in the Qur'an in 4:171- but the verse denies the Deity of Christ, that Jesus is the Son God and it denies the Trinity ) and the orthodox Sunni belief that the Qur'an is Allah's word and that word is eternal.   John 1:1-5 and 14 clearly speak to the eternality of the word being both with God and God Himself, and that word became flesh.
Christians should study Dr. White's book and go talk to Muslims and accept their hospitality to drink coffee and tea together and eat shish kebab, etc. and find out their heart language - whether it is Arabic, Farsi, Turkish, Kurdish, Urdu, Indonesian, Fulani, Punjabi or Malaysian - and get a New Testament in their language and give it to them and discuss John chapter 1 with them and the meaning of the eternality of the word (kalaam/Kalemeh کلام or   کلمه
Christians should realize that most Muslims are very hospitable and relational and men can easily talk to Muslim men, and women can talk to Muslim women; and Muslims usually respond very nicely to a kind smile and greetings and a respectful attitude.  Western Women who are Christians should not try to witness to Muslim men as a general rule.  And Christian men should get their wife or other Christian women in their church to reach out to the Muslim women.  Muslims are very family and community and group oriented; they are not as individualistic as westerners.  Once you meet one Muslim, and they let you into their life, you are sure to meet many other Muslims and your witnessing opportunities increase.
Because the Qur'an does call Jesus "the Word" (کلمه = kalameh - the singular for "word" for "kalaam" کلام ), we can use this as a springboard to John 1:1 and getting them to think.  Ask your Muslims friends - "Did God have His word within Himself from all eternity?"  "Was God ever without His word and His own thoughts?"  Get the discussion going, and use John chapter 1 and show it to them.

Second Discussion of chapter 1-a of James White's book.  About Muhammad's earliest years, first revelation with the angel Gabriel, his "night flight" to "the farthest Mosque" (Masjid al Aqsa - the famous Mosque on the temple mount in Jerusalem, Al Aqsa is named after this (not to be confused with "The Dome of the Rock" which is not technically a Mosque), and "Mi'raj" to heaven, the "Satanic verses", and about his military expeditions.  I make some comments on Waraqa ibn Naufal (who was supposed to be a Christian, and the main person who encouraged Muhammad with his first revelations) the stages of Jihad, and Abrogation.  See my comments there in the comboxes.

What Every Christian Needs to Know About the Qur'an, by James R. White

Just got this book yesterday; have not read it word for word yet, but I am jumping around to get the overall feel and then I will be reading it slowly.  It is excellent, from what I can tell.  I pray that God will use this for His glory to equip many Christians to "be prepared to give an answer for the hope that is within them"; remembering also to first, "sanctify Christ as Lord in their hearts" (1 Peter 3:15)

I also hope many Muslims will be open to reading this book, and give it a fair and respectful reading.  I wish this book was around back in 1983 when I first started reaching out to Muslims by playing soccer (the true football) with them, visiting them in their homes, having them in our home, playing chess and backgammon, drinking hot tea, Arabic and Turkish coffee, eating shish kebabs, cucumber salads, hummus and pita bread, and roasted pumpkins seeds, Iranian Ghormeh Sabzi قرمه سبزی (stew made with five green vegetables, beef, kidney beans, onions, and the famous dried lemon from Oman), over hours of discussion about God, heaven and hell, judgment day, Jesus, the atonement of Christ, salvation, faith, sin, original sin, politics, history, the Bible and the Qur'an, and many other topics.

Most Muslims are fun people to reach out to!  Christians need to crucify their fears.
