Martin Luther Did Not Write "Away in a Manger"

According to Hymnary.org, Away in a Manger is attributed to Martin Luther. I went through this a few years ago (see my link here). Luther did not write Away in a Manger!

Well, you ruined my Christmas!

I suppose next article that appears you will say "Luther didn't write A Mighty Fortress!" or "Luther probably never actually posted anything on a cathedral door. That is legend." or worse: "John Calvin probably never had a beard despite paintings depicting him with a beard."

I don't think I can listen to the hymn "Away in a Manger" now without sadness--knowing that old Marty Luther didn't write the hymn!

Yes, I think I can detect sarcasm in your remarks.

I make no apologies that the content of this blog is often tedious and a provoker of... "yawn." I enjoy tracing out the contexts and factual historical data surrounding quotes and myths... particularly about Martin Luther, but not limited to Martin Luther. I do this, primarily not for anonymous visitors like you, but rather self-indulgently for myself.

James,

My comment is more a sarcastic joke, not an insult sarcasm.

I like useless trivia facts too. If I am ever on Jeopardy, your BLOG may prove useful.

James, this blog is great, I have been reading it for years. Thank you for researching and bringing us the truth about the myths that have been fabricated against Luther over the centuries. God bless you. Damian from Argentina.
