James: I grew up in Northern NJ and spent much time in the summers riding my bikes to remote places and hiking. This looks like one of them. Where is the location? The way to Terrace Pond? up route 23? Tillman's ravine? I know I have been there.
The photo was taken from the bridge on Clinton Rd in the Newark Water Shed, West Milford.
I have hiked the area extensively- especially during the 80's.
This area is now a no tresspasing zone, because a little further down stream we would jump off a cliff into a little pond of water. Now, when I sneak back there- I can't believe I ever did something so foolish, as to jump off an at least 25 foot cliff into a little puddle of water.
The Castle has been knocked down- but we used to climb way up to the top of that as well. Hank's pond- near this area, is still a favorite swimming hole for me-
I haven't been to Terrace Pond in 7 or 8 years- last time I came in contact with Rattle Snakes on 2 different sections of the trail.
Surprise Lake is still a fav- the view from the top of the mountain can be stunning- sometimes on clear day you can see Manhattan.
I've been there ~! Did the same crazy stuff, though it was in the mid-late 70's. We would ride our bikes up Clinton road all the way from morris plains Nj where I grew up than hike up to terrace pond for a sleep over.(locking the bikes in the woods) .

“Let nobody suppose that he has tasted the Holy Scriptures sufficiently unless he has ruled over the churches with the prophets for a hundred years. Therefore there is something wonderful, first, about John the Baptist; second, about Christ; third, about the apostles...“We are beggars. That is true.” - Martin Luther
"It is true that the best apologetics can be given only when the system of truth is well known. But it is also true that the system of truth is not well known except it be seen in its opposition to error."- Cornelius Van Til
"But a most pernicious error widely prevails that Scripture has only so much weight as is conceded to it by the consent of the church. As if the eternal and inviolable truth of God depended upon the decision of men!"- John Calvin
"The Scriptures obtain full authority among believers only when men regard them as having sprung from heaven, as if there the living words of God were heard."- John Calvin
This is the best book available on Sola Scriptura. For Protestants, it will help you understand and defend sola scriptura. For Catholics, this book will help you understand exactly what Protestants mean by sola scriptura, rather than what you think it means. I highly recommend getting this book, it never leaves my desk, and serves as a valuable reference tool.
