Catholic Quotable

"Again, it is illogical to base faith upon the private interpretation of a book. For faith consists in submitting; private interpretation consists in judging. In faith by hearing, the last word rests with the teacher; in private judgment it rests with the reader, who submits the dead text of Scripture to a kind of post-mortem examination and delivers a verdict without appeal: he believes in himself rather than in any higher authority."

Did it mention anythg about people who derive their theology FROM the text?

How about your theology from your understanding of a book, whose context is 2,000 years away from you, which you do not possess, and further, a book that you do not even know is genuine.

I don't possess the context? Ever heard of commentaries? Lexica? Textbooks on NT Backgrds? Comparative grammar? I can't read the whole Bible and get a ton of context out of that?

(Anyone else notice how ignorant of biblical study Leo is?)

And I know it's genuine, so you can drop that.

You know of what I refer to, you are again avoiding the point by attacking me.

Ever hear of primary context?
You reject it, so how oh how can you claim that something novel can provide that which the primary cannot?

Pointing out that you are woefully ignorant of the Scr is attacking you? OK.

Yes, I've heard of primary context. That's why I study so I can know the primary context BETTER. You are amazing.

But maybe you had sthg better in mind. Pray tell.

"Again, it is illogical to base faith upon the private interpretation of Trent. For faith consists in submitting; private interpretation consists in judging. In faith by hearing, the last word rests with the priest (or Bishops?); in private judgment it rests with the reader, who submits the dead text of Trent's pronouncments to a kind of post-mortem examination and delivers a verdict without appeal: he believes himself rather than in a higher authority."

Following Crossed the Tiber's Blog, is the above not exactly what we have? I read Trent and came away with a totally different conclusion from him. The Pope's recent pronouncment about whose church is the true church also had a vastly different interpretation by him than how we Protestants interpreted it. Apparently Rome is still unable to make herself clear while claiming God's Word is not clear. The arrogance of Rome is simply blasphemous.

"Dead text"

[rolls eyes]

That single idea explains a heckuva lot about Catholicism.
