DOWNLOAD CALVIN’S SERMONS ON DEUTERONOMY
Source: Gary North, The Tea Party Economist
The download consists of a few zip files that open up Microsoft Word documents, and the layout is very well done in two columns.
Yes, I downloaded it, and my computer is still functioning properly, although I'm now looking behind the bushes around my house to see if there are any Democrats hiding in wait.
Amazon has this volume used for around $100 at the posting of this entry. New copies are going for $267.34.
In regard to Calvin's sermons in general:
The forty-eight bound manuscript volumes of his sermons- precious as they were the originals, and the more so because a number had not been published- were committed to the Library of Geneva for safe-keeping in November, 1613. Before the end of the next century it appears that nine of these bulky volumes were missing, and then, in 1805, on the grounds they were taking up too much space, all that remained were sold by mere weight to local booksellers! Hi James,
ReplyDeleteNice find !!!
As one who has had a ongoing interest in Calvinism and theonomy, having all of Calvin's sermons on Deuteronomy is valuable contribution to my continuing studies.
I first became aware of Calvin's sermons on Deuteronomy back in 1990 when Gary North and James Jordan published 15 of those sermons in the book, The Covenant Enforced - Institute for Christian Economics. (PDF copy available HERE - there seems to be a few typographical errors in the pdf version that are not in my hardcopy.)
The following is from the inside flap of the book:
>> John Calvin preached through the book of Deuteronomy on weekdays from March, 1555, to July, 1556. In all, he preached 200 sermons, expounding the book in detail and making applications to the social and political life of Geneva, as well as to the personal lives of her citizens.
The fifteen sermons selected here have not been seen in English since they were first translated and published in 1583. In this volume, editor James B. Jordan has revised Arthur Golding's translation into modern English, making Calvin's words come alive with renewed impact.
These sermons are as timely today as when they were first preached. Cultures that depart from God fall under His judgment. So says the Bible, and so said John Calvin. Cultures that obey God, however, receive His blessing. If there is a message that the Western world needs to hear at the present time, surely this is it.>>
It seems Dr. North and Dr. Jordan have made a slight error in that the Banner of Truth Trust republished 1583 version in 1987.
Anyway, thanks for posting the links. Off to compare Dr. Jordan's translations with Golding's...
Grace and peace,
David
Hello again James,
ReplyDeleteI have started rereading The Covenant Enforced, and would like to like to alter a portion of my previous post.
Dr. North in his "Publisher's Preface" and Dr. Jordan in his "Editor's Introduction" both acknowledge the Banner of Truth Trust 1987 publication. So, the statement made on inside flap of their book—"The fifteen sermons selected here have not been seen in English since they were first translated and published in 1583—must have reference to a new English translation.
Grace and peace,
David
