Thus the infallible decree of Trent, which occurred (April 8th, 1546) over Luther's dead body (February 8,1546), needed to more fully condemn the Reformation this regard.

Was Eck's response to Luther's denial of Maccabees that of charging him with excluding canonical books?

The debate with Eck lasted from June to July 1519, and Exsurge Domine was issued June 15, 1520, and the only condemnation in this regard is that of #
37. "Purgatory cannot be proved from Sacred Scripture which is in the canon,"

Yet this does not specify that his exclusion of 2 Mac is why this statement is condemned, and 2 Mac. 12:39-44 only supports prayer being offered for the dead, and that is for men who died due to mortal sin. and as Luther expressed, only faithful RCs find support in it.

The verse commentary for 2 Maccabees 12: 42-46 from the New Catholic Answers Bible, as well as the NAB, states that, "The statement is made here, however, only for the purpose of proving that Judas believed in the resurrection of the just."

*The CE states "His rectitude, candour, and moderation were praised even by his enemies. Always obedient, and submitting his works to ecclesiastical authority, he presented a striking contrast to the leaders of heresy and revolt, whom he strove to save from their folly." And "It was the common opinion of his contemporaries that had he lived, he would have succeeded Clement VII on the papal throne." — http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03145c.htm

** "There is no proof of Purgatory in any portion of sacred Scripture, which can enter into the argument, and serve as a proof; for the book of Maccabees not being in the Canon, is of weight with the faithful, but avails nothing with the obstinate" (quoted by Michuta, p. 249. Even if no council affirmed the Prot canon (and RCs had to wait until the year Luther died for they had an "infallible" indisputable canon), as the Catholic Encyclopedia (Canon of the Old Testament) affirms that that the Hebrew Bible became the Old Testament of Protestantism, then with that and with the 27 book canon seeing early acceptance, the Prot canon had the most ancient support.

As for looking to the LXX for support, see here: http://www.aomin.org/aoblog/index.php?itemid=3956

And as the NT makes clear, an infallible canon is not required for writings to be established as Scripture, (Lk. 24:44), and which is due to their uniquely heavenly effect and attestation, not conciliar decrees, as warranted and helpful as they can be.
PeaceByJesushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08754948549904895669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19795707.post-28882509771072813192012-11-28T19:04:22.667-05:002012-11-28T19:04:22.667-05:00Forgive me. The topic of this particular blog entry are the verses:

Romans 3:20

and

Romans 4:15

These verses are actually part of the title of this entry.

You'll notice also, the word in question is not "alone", rather it is "only."

If you have any evidence Luther added "only" to Romans 3:20, Catholic Answers could use your help here. As it stands now, they appear to just cut-and-paste stuff off the Internet without checking their facts.

James Swanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16136781934797867593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19795707.post-19171520012930006822012-11-28T13:13:17.164-05:002012-11-28T13:13:17.164-05:00Luther did originally insert "alone" in ...Luther did originally insert "alone" in his original translation:

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=romans%203:28&version=LUTH1545

http://translate.google.com/#auto/en/So%20halten%20wir%20nun%20daf%C3%BCr%2C%20da%C3%9F%20der%20Mensch%20gerecht%20werde%20ohne%20des%20Gesetzes%20Werke%2C%20allein%20durch%20den%20Glauben

http://archive.org/stream/DasNeweTestamentDeutzsch1522/DasNeweTestamentDeutzsch1522SeptemberbibelErstenAusgabeNachbildung1883Small#page/n250/mode/1upTexas Seraphimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03431635961673171869noreply@blogger.com
