Devin Rose on Catholic Answers

Dr. White reviewed the interview with Devin Rose on Catholic Answers.  Devin, please take the time to listen to Dr. White's comments on your book and your interview.

Addendum 2/14/15

Sadly, Mr. Rose has stated the following:

Devin Rose Yeah I actually did notice this yesterday afternoon, but only because White tweeted at me and I happened to check my twitter notifications. I have not responded. I watched a few minutes where he begins to try to rebut what I said, but he says something nonsensical about apostolic succession and I didn't waste anymore time on it

Devin Rose I've gone back and forth in my mind, thinking similar things to Paul H., Paul T., and Justin. I do hope to make a blog post rebutting the arguments that White makes in this video. But it requires listening to it (time), clearly formulating the rebuttal (time), and blogging about it (more time). I've got a full time job--sometimes more than full-time, and the rest I try to spend with my family. I have to consider carefully whether it is worth my time to respond to him. Clearly it isn't for his benefit, as he is hardened against the truth of the Catholic Church, but it would be for the benefit of readers/listeners.

One of the best DLs focusing on the issues of Apostolic succession, authority claims, history of Popes, etc.

I was going to embed it also; but you beat me to it.

I rarely get a chance to listen to the DL live, but I did catch this one as it happened.

I use Kelly's book on the Popes all the time. I'm grateful Dr. White brought it up, and then addressed apostolic succession.

On an unrelated note, it appears Ken that when you post a comment here, it does not first go to moderation. That's great. It's too bad blogger doesn't have a way for me to allow certain people to comment without moderation- like EA, Zipper, PBJ.

Thanks for the mention, James. I probably need to moderate my comments more than I already do. I am trying to adhere to the sense of decorum that you are trying to uphold here.

Blessings.

BTW, thanks for posting the DL video. I'm always interested in hearing Dr. White's assessment of RC argumentation.

EA: you really struck a nerve with Mr. Fawkes. You should see some of his comments since I stopped posting them. He said some very uncharitable things about you. his last love note called you "a damn sycophant." In another comment directed toward you and zipper he said, "Get lives of your own. Get girlfriends, jobs, hobbies."

Then of course, his comments about me, which are still coming in, are well, not nearly as nice as those he directed toward you.

I have JUST now finished watching this video (my phone doesn't like long videos for some reason). It was interesting to hear Dr. White's explinations on Apostolic Succession and Sola Scriptura. I wish he would have been able to explain more about Devin Rose, but I also understand why he didn't.

James, you said:

"I use Kelly's book on the Popes all the time. I'm grateful Dr. White brought it up, and then addressed apostolic succession."

I was slightly distracted by my phone loading and reloading the video, if I remember right Kelly's book was something like The Encyclopedia of Popes. I haven't looked into this book but I'm interested in it now. Usually, I don't memorize things very well, so I am always referencing other things.

White's comments about the "unbroken chain" reminded me of a discussion I had on this blog once with someone a few years ago (I believe it was Catholic Nick but I could be wrong). I had just glanced at the Papal list on Wikipedia and noticed some gaping holes in the whole "unbroken chain" and asked for clarification. The response was that even if the only connection was between St. Peter and Benedict (who was pope at the time) and there were no popes in between the two men, then that would still be defined as an "unbroken chain." This made me realize the nonsense of that phrase and hollow meaning it provides.

Also, it implies a meaning that's liberal like in Mormonism where there is a restoration of the church rather then a reformation. This makes sense due to the fact that every major council of the RCC acts like it hits the reset button and everything before that in history is to be defined by the standards of the latest council/pope.

Anyways, then James you said:

"It's too bad blogger doesn't have a way for me to allow certain people to comment without moderation- like EA, Zipper, PBJ."

Thank you for the mention, I appreciate it. I always enjoy reading comments by Ken, EA, PBJ, and others on here. Is there a way to private message individuals on here? I haven't looked into it, but I would love to discuss things with others without going off on a rabbit trail on your blog (like I did right there).

I'll end with this James:

"In another comment directed toward you and zipper he said, "Get lives of your own. Get girlfriends, jobs, hobbies.""

The irony here is amazing. EA and I post here occasionally, GF posted here at times 20-50 posts in a 24 hour period. Just for the record Guy, I have a wife, a job, and I love cars (and many other hobbys too.

It is tragic, James. Fortunately we live in an age where advances are being made all the time in every branch of medicine, including psychiatric phamaceuticals; so there is hope. I'm encouraged to hear that the policies at the asylum have been liberalized to the point where Guy is able to have contact with the outside world. I'll consider that progress. Please extend my warmest regards to Guy should you speak to him. His presence is missed at every moment.

It sounds like Devin Rose is too busy promoting his book on Catholic Answers Live and Relevant Radio in his spare time to respond to Dr. White's critique. That's too bad; it would be nice to see a more substantive reply than can be contained in a tweet.

Here's an idea: I set up a temporary mailbox at Mailinator.com. The inbox is receive only, it doesn't allow outgoing emails. If you or anyone else here wants to email me, send me an email with your private email address to the following address:

contactea@mailinator.com

and I will email you back from my private email. That way we can explore "rabbit trails" without distracting from James' blog. That also allows me to ignore email from individuals who may want to "monopolize" the conversation.
